June 10: NCBA recommends changes to the Beef Checkoff Program
Of all the matters debated at the 2008 Cattle Industry Annual Convention, the Beef Checkoff Program topped the list.  Roughly 20 state cattlemen’s associations brought forward recommendations to create NCBA policy enhancing the 20-year-old program.  We have more in this week’s Cattlemen’s Capitol Concerns.

Apr. 22: USDA Issues a Draft of the National Animal ID System
USDA has issued a draft business plan to further implement the National Animal Identification System.  The agency feels that the system can be a valuable tool for addressing animal health emergencies and can help livestock producers establish eligibility for several voluntary marketing programs.  For more information from USDA visit: www.usda.gov/nais.

Feb. 26: Secretary of Agriculture Ed Schafer at the 2008 Cattle Industry Annual Convention
Newly appointed Secretary of Agriculture Ed Schafer gave his first official address to cattlemen at the 2008 Cattle Industry Annual convention in Reno, Nevada.  Secretary Schafer spoke to the audience about the role he intends to play in international trade.  "When I visited with the President," said Schafer, "and we had the conversation about me becoming the Secretary of Agriculture, he said, 'Ed, I want you to weigh in on trade issues – this is important.'  He asked me to get involved, and I certainly will."  Learn more about Secretary Schafer at usda.gov.

NCBA's Cattlemen to Cattlemen reports on the confirmation of new U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Edward Schafer. Secretary Schafer was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on Jan. 28, and is scheduled to address cattlemen at the 2008 Cattle Industry Convention and Trade Show in Reno on Friday, Feb. 8.

Jan. 29: Congress is Expected to Return to Work on the Farm Bill
Upcoming work on the Farm Bill heads this week's cattle industry news. With both houses of Congress passing their own version of the new Farm Bill last year, attention now turns to the conference committee process. Differences between the two bills must be resolved in conference, and this process is likely to begin in early February. You can learn more by visiting beefusa.org.
