June 10: NCBA recommends changes to the Beef Checkoff Program Of all the matters debated at the 2008 Cattle Industry Annual Convention, the Beef Checkoff Program topped the list. Apr. 29: South Korea Reopens Market to U.S. Beef The United States and South Korea have reached an agreement reopening the South Korean market to U.S. Beef. The two countries announced a new trade protocol on April 18th. It allows boneless and bone-in cuts of beef to be exported to South Korea. NCBA President Andy Groseta traveled to Korea in February and says he’s excited to see U.S. beef back in Korea. For more information visit: www.BeefUSA.org. |

Apr. 15: Corn Prices Break the $6/Bushel Mark News from the grain markets turned from bad to worse recently as corn prices broke the $6.00/bushel mark. The price surge was due in part to a prospective plantings report from USDA that projects and 8% reduction in corn acres this year. NCBA Chief Economist Gregg Doud has more. |

Apr. 8: NCBA Petitions USDA to Protect Grade Labels NCBA is working to protect the value of USDA's prime, choice, and select grade labels. Due to concerns about misuse of these terms in other segments of the meat industry, NCBA filed a petition with the USDA's Food Safety End Inspection Service. |

Mar. 11: JBS Purchases Smithfield and National Beef Major acquisitions in the processing industry top this week's cattle industry news. JBS, the Brazilian company that acquired Swift and Company last year, has announced the purchase of Smithfield Beef Group and National Beef. The Smithfield acquisition also includes Five Rivers Cattle Feeding, the nation's largest cattle feeder. |

Mar. 11: Tribute to Paul Hitch This week we're paying tribute to a great cattle industry leader, Paul Hitch. Mr. Hitch passed away this week after a difficult battle with cancer. Mr. Hitch was a former chairman of the NCBA Policy Division and NCBA Live Cattle Marketing Committee. He had served the past two years as vice-president and president-elect of NCBA. At the 2008 Cattle Industry Annual Convention and Trade Show, Mr. Hitch was presented with a letter of appreciation for decades of outstanding service to the association, as well as his leadership in state and local cattlemen's organizations. Mr. Hitch addressed a large crowd of cattlemen in Reno. |
